Heavy rain, hail hit northern Colorado; week of storms to keep metro area cool and wet

DENVER — Heavy rain and hail fell in northern Colorado on Tuesday morning.

About 2 inches of hail fell near Greeley and La Salle in Weld County. Hail also fell in Broomfield, Lafayette and Thornton. Several vehicles slid off Highway 85 and a couple of vehicles were seen flipped over.

Snowplows also were called out to clear the hail from the roads.

Rain is expected in the metro area on Tuesday afternoon with some pockets possibly getting hail.

The metro area will be plagued this week with a series of weather disturbances that will keep the area cloudy, windy, cool, and in showers and thunderstorms.

The first of three storms moved into the area overnight, bringing rain showers and some thunder. But it has moved out and Tuesday will start with some morning sun and clouds.

But there’s a 40 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. It might turn to wet snow overnight into Wednesday morning, and light accumulations are possible in the foothills and the Palmer Divide. Highs on Tuesday will be in the mid-50s.

In the mountains, snow showers will continue, with the heaviest in the northern mountains, with 3-8 inches expected. In the central mountains, 1-4 inches of snow are expected.

Wednesday will be the driest day of the week with only a 10 percent chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. Highs will be in the mid-50s.

The second storm arrives Thursday into Friday with a good chance of rain and snow across the Front Range. Accumulations will be light and highs will be in the upper 40s.

The third storm moves into the area during the weekend with a continuation of rain and snow on Saturday. It will turn drier but there will be lingering chances of rain and snow showers.
