The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season developed in the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday afternoon.

Tropical Storm Andrea has formed in the east-central part of the Gulf. It could hit the Florida panhandle with heavy rain and strong winds within 36 hours. The storm probably will not have enough time to strengthen into a hurricane.

The Hurricane Center intended to start issuing tropical storm advisories for the region Wednesday evening.

A tropical storm must have sustained winds of at least 39 miles per hour.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially began June 1 and runs until November 30.
