The Colorado Avalanche Information Center issued a Special Avalanche Advisory Tuesday afternoon for Steamboat and Flat Tops, the Front Range, Vail and Summit Counties, Aspen, Gunnison, North San Juan, South San Juan and Sawatch Zones.

Avalanche conditions in the back-country are extremely dangerous, said CAIC.

The center recommended “cautious route-finding and conservative decision-making” to those in the listed areas. Additionally, it advised that people do not travel in or below avalanche terrain.

Due to the heavy snowfall over the past week and weekend, CAIC said that deeply buried weak layers are “at a tipping point.”

Several substantial avalanches have already been prompted by back-country travelers and explosives, said CAIC.

The advisory began Tuesday at noon and goes until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
