BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. — Matt Russell, the director of player personnel for the Denver Broncos, was sentenced to seven months in jail and two years probation on Friday, for a DUI wreck last year.

Russell’s blood alcohol level was .246 — three times the legal limit — when his car slammed into a police cruiser in Summit County in July 2013, according to court documents.

On Friday, Russell pleaded guilty to DUI, admitted to careless driving resulting in injury and to having an open container in his vehicle.

He will be allowed to serve his seven-month jail sentence in an Arapahoe County jail, per a condition of his plea agreement.

Russell reportedly ran into another citizen’s car in Frisco on the same night he rear-ended the Breckenridge Police cruiser, which was out waiting for him to pass on Highway 9 after dispatchers received a report of a drunk driver in the area.

Russell reportedly rear-ended that officer, who was pulled over on the shoulder, going 40 mph. The officer was hospitalized with neck and back pain and a cut on his arm, according to court records.

A former linebacker at CU-Boulder and the NFL’s Detroit Lions, Russell has served in his current role with the Broncos since 2009. The team issued the following statement shortly after his sentencing on Friday:

“We are pleased with the commitment Matt Russell has shown to making positive changes in his life since this incident occurred nearly a year ago. In addition to his successful completion of a month-long inpatient treatment program last summer, he has taken full advantage of outpatient counseling resources and passed every substance abuse test administered as part of his reinstatement to this organization.

“We will continue to support Matt as a member of the Denver Broncos and this community.”
