NEW YORK — Two years ago, he was leading Valor Christian High School to a fifth consecutive Colorado state high school championship. On Saturday night, Christian McCaffrey will be in New York as one of three finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

McCaffrey, a dynamic sophomore running back for Stanford, was named a finalist for college football’s most prestigious award on Monday. He’ll be joined by Alabama’s Derrick Henry and Clemson’s Deshaun Watson.

McCaffrey, the son of former Broncos receiver and current Broncos radio analyst Ed McCaffrey, ran for 300 yards last season, but he came into the national spotlight this season by finishing with 1,847 rushing yards and 540 receiving yards.

On Saturday, McCaffrey had 461 all-purpose yards in a 41-22 win over USC in the Pac-12 championship game. He has 3,496 all-purpose yards, breaking the record of 3,250 set by Barry Sanders at Oklahoma State in 1988.

Stanford will play Iowa in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

McCaffrey and his brother Max helped Valor Christian become a state football powerhouse, winning the 3A title in 2009, the 4A titles in 2010 and 2011, and the 5A crowns in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

On Saturday, their brother Dylan quarterbacked the Eagles to the 5A title with a 29-26 win over Pomona for Valor Christian’s sixth state title in the past seven years.
