ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The fans set another new record Thursday for attendance at a Denver Broncos training camp practice at Dove Valley.
“I thought there would be 400 or 500,” one fan said.
Try 5,034 fans. There wasn’t much room left at the practice facility.
Here are some of the typical comments: “Really am surprised.”
“I just wonder if these people work.”
Now normally we are used to the hard core fans coming to training camp during the middle of the week. But you are starting to notice more families coming by.
“It was the first time to see an actual training camp,” says Robert McMullen who was there with his children Aubriana and Colton Thursday. “Spend time with family … pretty much it`s more important to spend time with your family than going somewhere.”
“Why are you out here? What’s the main reason? FOX31 Denver’s Raul Martinez asked. “The main reason is to see Peyton Manning,” one fan responded.
Everyone we talked was there for the same main reason.
“The best quarterback.”
“He`s just my dad’s favorite.”
Peyton Manning has been impressed by the Broncos fans. “There have been great crowds out here at camp. I’ve always thought that the louder the place is, the tougher it is on opposing quarterbacks coming in, and the home team can feed off that energy, so I know the crowd, the 12th man will, be a big part of our season this year, and Saturday will be a good way to start it off.”
The Broncos hold a practice and scrimmage at Invesco Field at Mile High on Saturday. The team has seen 40,000 fans show up for this scrimmage in the past. Officials expect 50,000 or more Saturday. Gates open at 3:30 p.m.
