COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio high school runner proves that sportsmanship is still alive, even if it means sacrificing to help someone on another team.
17-year-old Meghan Vogel, a junior at West Liberty-Salem High School was in last place during the 3,200 meter run at the state track meet Saturday.
She saw Arlington High School sophomore Arden McMath nearly collapse on the track in front of her on the home stretch.
Instead of passing her, Vogel put her arm around her competitor and helped her to the finish line in front of a cheering crowd.
The rules say both runners should have been disqualified. But officials decided not to take any action in this case.
Vogel had already won the state title in the 1,600 meter race a little earlier in the day. Some say she became a champion twice.
