DENVER — An alleged drunk driver plowed through a Denver neighborhood Sunday night, and when he stumbled out of the car he was restrained by homeowners until authorities arrived, the Denver Police Department said.

The incident happened near East 35th Avenue and Jasmine Street just after 9:30 p.m.

Witnesses said the driver was going at least 75 mph when he ran a stop sign, nearly missed a group of kids playing outside, then hit four parked cars before ending up in the front lawn of a home.

People inside the house heard the crash and ran outside. They said they saw the man stumble out of his car when one of the men tackled him, holding him down until police arrived.

Michelle Prissel said her kids were playing in the front yard just a minute before the car came barreling through the yard.  One bystander said when he opened his car door beer bottles fell out.

The driver was taken to the hospital in handcuffs with unknown injuries, according to witnesses.

A police spokeswoman said officers might have pulled over the driver for an unrelated incident earlier, but are not releasing any more information.

The suspect’s identity has not been released.
