EVERGREEN, Colo. — Volunteers scooped more than 400 pounds of waste at a dog park in Evergreen over the weekend.

Dozens of people gathered Saturday at the Elk Meadow dog park, on Stagecoach Boulevard, for National Public Lands Day.

The cleanup started at 8 a.m., and the group collected and bagged 424 pounds of dog waste.

Open space officials said a company called DoodyCalls showed up with the pooper scoopers.

And local residents, scouts and families showed up to help scoop.

Volunteers did their best to enjoy the dirty job by keeping score and awarding prizes (“Golden Poo”) for the best picker-uppers.

The volunteers got a big thank you on Facebook from officials and community members.

“Thank you all for your help, we love that park, PICK UP YOUR POOP PEOPLE!” Jason Humphrey wrote.

“Thank you volunteers! Let’s KEEP it clean. Watch your dog and bring poo bags on your hikes so that we don’t lose the privilege of enjoying this wonderful park with our furry friends,” wrote Lisa Padgett.

Organizers also handed out special packs at the event to make it easier for people to pick up waste on the go.
