DENVER -- FOX31 Denver cameras were rolling as Denver Police moved in and removed Occupy protesters from the sidewalks near Civic Center Park overnight.

After repeated orders for occupiers to disperse, police moved in before midnight.

Protestors set fire to a few of the makeshift structures, blocking Civic Center's Broadway sidewalk.

"Had they not set some of the structures on fire we would have been able to have more of a conversation,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Tuesday.

Denver Chief of Police Robert White had met with Occupy Denver leaders twice, warning them that city law bans structures in parks.

"We're going to let them exercise their First Amendment rights, but as it relates to the structures and any of the other violations we're going to enforce those ,” White said.

9 people were arrested. Police forcibly removed roughly 40 people from the park.

"It went a day or two longer than it probably should have because we were attempting to communicate and really have them take leadership and remove the structures,” Hancock said. “When they didn't, we had to move in publicly.”
