Jennifer Broome hikes up Mt. Garfield, near Grand Junction, where it’s a long way up, but the scenery is worth the walk.

Mount Garfield is a prominent outcrop in the Book Cliffs in Western Colorado.  You can’t miss it when driving west to Palisade or Grand Junction.  In the late 1800s settlers in the Grand Valley dedicated the mountain in honor of President James Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881.

If you are looking for a short strenuous hike then the Mount Garfield Trail is for you.  It has a 2,000 foot elevation gain within the two miles to the top.  Most of the elevation gain is within the first half to three-quarters of a mile.
