EVERGREEN, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation shut down U.S. 40 in both directions Tuesday between the Soda Creek and El Rancho exits due to a sinkhole.

CDOT said crews were on site, working to repair the approximately eight-foot sinkhole that closed the road between mile markers 276 to 276.6.

Crews will replace a pipe that is 10 feet deep and 100 feet long with upgraded materials to handle the increased water flow and to stabilize the area, added CDOT.

CDOT said the repair work will take awhile, and the roadway is expected to remain closed overnight.

Motorists were advised to access Evergreen by staying on Interstate 70 and take exit 253, Chief Hosa.
