HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — A car struck and killed two workers in a construction zone on South Broadway near the C-470 on-ramp Tuesday afternoon.
According to CSP Trooper Nate Reid, a Subaru SUV being driven by Thomas Garrity, 74, of Bellvue Neb., was westbound on C-470 and was exiting onto Broadway when he lost control and hit the two men. It’s not yet known why Garrity lost control.
The Subaru also hit a white Honda Pilot before finally coming to a stop.
Garrity, and his wife Francine, 72, were taken to a local hospital for treatment, Reid said. The driver of the Pilot was not injured, he said.
FOX31 Denver has learned the victims are Jesus Villalobos, 27, from Brighton and Joe Schwartz, 47, from Morrison.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the construction zone was part of a Douglas County Improvement Project.
CDOT spokesman Stacey Stegman said the two individuals were contract employees working for Concrete Works of Colorado.
Broadway was closed between County Line Road and Dad Clark Drive at noon and reopened around 4 p.m.
