NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Two men from Colorado were killed Wednesday night after pickup truck slammed head-on into a semitruck, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office in Nebraska said.

The crash happened on U.S. 83. Witnesses said the pickup was traveling northbound when it slammed into the semitruck that was traveling southbound. Witnesses said the driver of the pickup was traveling well above the speed limit and driving aggressively.

Just before the accident, the pickup attempted to pass a utility vehicle and veered into the southbound lane, striking the semitruck.

The driver of the pickup, 28-year-old Shane O’Conner of Westminster was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the pickup, 32-year-old Craig Vanmeter of North Platte, Neb., was ejected and taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the semitruck, 66-year-old Ralph Brandt of Ovid, Colo., was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said methamphetamine is suspected to have been found on O’Conner’s body. Other types of drugs, drug paraphernalia and alcoholic beverages were found in the stolen vehicle.
