LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Two 12-year-old girls were arrested in connection with vandalism that forced Slater Elementary School to close Monday, the Lakewood Police Department said.
A custodian noticed vandalism throughout the school at 8605 W. 23rd Ave. when he arrived early Monday morning. Papers were torn off boards, classrooms were defaced, trash cans were dumped, trash was strewn and items were missing from classrooms, Jefferson County Public Schools said.
The school was forced to close because it would have taken too much time to clean up in time for classes to begin. Officials worked throughout Monday to clean up the mess and the school is expected to be open on time Tuesday.
Lakewood Police say the girls could face burglary and criminal mischief charges.
