KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A very special stray pit bull will soon, hopefully, have a good home. This after the dog stepped in to help a woman when a man was attacking her, WATE reports.

Officers said the dog, who they named Hero, was able to separate the woman from her attacker, but was stabbed five times in the process. Officers took Hero to a local veterinarian to save him.

“I don’t think we could have let that dog suffer and die. We felt like we needed to get that dog some help after what it had been through,” officer Timothy Clay told WATE.

After the vet discounted the cost of surgery, Carla Welch, who runs a pit bull rescue, stepped in to help. She even raised enough money to help pay for his medical bills.

“For those two officers to go to the extent they did to save him is very heroic and very awesome,” Welch told WATE.

She said Hero is laid back and likes people. The 7-year-old pit bull is now up for adoption.
