ESTES PARK, Colo. – Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States, opened to travelers Monday, the National Park Service announced.

The road historically opens on Memorial Day weekend. Last year, however, due to historic snow accumulation, it didn’t open until June 6.

This year’s opening is the third earliest day that Trail Ridge Road has opened since the road was completed in 1932.

Trail Ridge Road climbs to 12,183 feet through Rocky Mountain National Park and connects the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake.

“Because weather conditions may change rapidly, particularly in spring and fall, park visitors should be prepared to adjust travel plans accordingly,” NPS spokesman Kyle Patterson said.

Travelers are encouraged to call the park’s Trail Ridge Road recorded phone line at (970) 586-1222.
