EDGEWATER, Colo. -- Eight people -- five of them children, including a 4-year-old -- were sent to a hospital Sunday night after a horrific four-vehicle crash near Sloan's Lake. The driver of one of the vehicles suffered life-threatening injuries and is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence , the Edgewater Police Department said.
The intersection of West 17th Avenue and Sheridan Avenue was closed for several hours beginning about 9 p.m. as the accident was investigated. The intersection reopened just after 2 a.m.
Edgewater police said a Mercury Mountaineer was traveling southbound on Sheridan at an unknown speed when it rear-ended a vehicle that was exiting the King Soopers parking lot.
The collision caused the Mountaineer to fly out of control and flip onto its roof before colliding with two other vehicles that were traveling northbound.
The driver of the Mountaineer, an unidentified 33-year-old woman from Commerce City, had to be cut out of the vehicle. She suffered major, life-threatening head injuries and was transported to Denver General Hospital.
The other seven people suffered injuries from broken bones and ribs. They were transported to Denver General and the injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The seven include one man, two women, two juvenile females and three juvenile males The youngest is a 4-year-old.
Police say the driver of the Mountaineer is facing charges of vehicular assault, reckless driving, driving under the influence, operating a vehicle with a revoked license and operating a vehicle while a habitual traffic offender.
Edgewater police and the Colorado State Patrol are jointly investigating the accident.
