DENVER -- Thousands are expected to gather in Civic Center Park in downtown Denver for the first 4/20 rally since recreational pot was legalized in Colorado.

The City of Denver approved permits for the event earlier this month.

The 2-day marijuana festival is expected to be the largest such event ever ... anywhere. There are many people who have traveled to Denver for the event from all over, just to see what's happening here when it comes to pot.

While smoking pot in public is illegal, Denver Police say they'll be focused more on keeping the crowds under control than handing out citations for lighting up.

Governor John Hickenlooper has urged the crowds to behave. "We're certainly urging everybody to keep their heads screwed on right and behave responsibly ... make sure people aren't out there driving while high."

There will be a large police presence to watch the large crowd at the festival which kicks off Saturday and then will continue on Sunday.

There will be dozens of vendors advertising their marijuana products, along with the usual parade of food and music.
