BOULDER, Colo. -- A roommate of a Boulder man who lost both his legs after an accident with a suspected texting and DUI driver said he is the most physically fit person she knows.

Police said 19-year-old Dylan Gottschling had taken heroin on Friday and Xanax on Sunday before getting behind the wheel.

He told investigators he was texting and looking down at his phone when he crashed into a parked car, pushed it 12 feet down the street where it pinned 28-year-old Craig Towler to a tailgate and led to the amputation of both his legs.

The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of East Aurora Avenue. Police said Gottschling was going eastbound on Aurora Avenue in a Subaru WRX when he collided with the back of a parked Toyota 4 Runner. The 4 Runner then struck the back of a parked Toyota Sequoia.

It happened outside Towler's home and his roommate Alex Gardner said they could immediately see how critical the injury was.

She said Towler remained alert enough to walk them through how to apply a tourniquet until paramedics arrived.

Gardner said Towler works out twice a day, doesn't drink alcohol or eat sugar and is dedicated to a lifestyle of health and fitness.

Gottschling is being held in the Boulder County jail for investigation  of vehicular assault, reckless driving, DUI and texting while driving.

Friends set up a GoFundMe account to help with medical bills and rehabilitation.
