DENVER – A teenage driver will be charged with three crimes in a fatal accident that killed a grandfather and his granddaughter, officials announced Monday.
The collision, which took place on April 28 at I-225 and East 17th Place in Aurora, left 40-year-old Jaime Humberto Ramerez-Lopez and 2-month-old Kataley Ramerez-Cespedes dead.
The SUV driven by the male teenager took the 17th Place exit from I-225 about 5:11 p.m., heading towards Colfax Avenue, said Aurora Police Department Traffic Lt. Jeff Turner. An eastbound truck then struck the SUV.
Detectives conducted an extensive investigation which determined the teenage truck driver failed to stop for a red light. Traffic investigators determined through accident reconstruction that the truck was exceeding the 25 MPH speed limit by 12 to 17 MPH, while the SUV was driving within the posted speed limit.
The juvenile pick-up truck driver will be charged with two counts of careless driving resulting in death and driving a motor vehicle without a driver’s license.
