DALLAS — New research by AT&T released on Wednesday, determined more than half of drivers surveyed use their smartphones while driving.

With 7 out of 10 people using their smartphones while driving, texting was not always the reason people driving are looking at their phone.

Research found that 4 in 10 smartphone users check social media while driving. Then almost 3 in 10 surf the internet and video chatting distracts 1 in 10 smart phone users.

Texting and email proved to be the most common distraction while driving.

AT&T said they plan to expand their ‘It Can Wait‘ campaign after these results were released.

“When we launched ‘It Can Wait’ five years ago, we pleaded with people to realize that no text is worth a life,” said Lori Lee, AT&T’s global marketing officer. “The same applies to other smartphone activities that people are doing while driving.”

Detailed research proved that drivers use multiple smartphone apps while driving.
