DENVER -- Whether you like it, hate it or don’t even know what it is, social media is here to stay.

Twitter, email, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook are just a few of the ways you can engage in the smart device phenom.

But the question being asked by the Pew Research Center’s 2016 report is this: Is it a good thing, bad thing or somewhere in between thing?

“It’s all of the above. It’s a good thing and a bad thing,” said Dr. Randi Smith, psychology professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

She comments on the double-edged report on social media in the workplace. First, the good.

“Employee satisfaction is a huge one. So people may feel better about themselves and their jobs if they are engaged in social media,” Smith said.

Now, the not so good.

“It can affect people’s productivity. If I am engaging with Facebook and it’s not work-related maybe it’s keeping me from work I should be doing,” she said.

But the ability of social media to reach the masses cannot be denied.

“The business can benefit from promoting itself depending what business it is,”  Smith said.

Like television news. Social media plays a very big and competitive role in attracting viewers.
