DENVER -- Getting back into healthy habits after the winter slumber isn't always the easiest thing to do. Technology can help. I had a chance to test out 2 gadgets from Wahoo Fitness designed to connect to your iPhone to get you back on track.
The Wahoo Balance Smartphone scale looks like a typical bathroom scale. It's made of glass with a plastic base on the bottom. Stand on the scale and it'll display your weight and BMI. The difference is, the Wahoo scale has Bluetooth 4.0 built-in so it can talk to a newer iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
The Wahoo Wellness app will let you store and track your weigh-ins and set goals. You can also use the scale with a long list of other fitness apps. If you use any of the standard jogging fitness apps, like Runkeeper, the Wahoo scale integrates perfectly.
The Wahoo scale will store up to 130 weigh-ins when your iPhone isn't nearby. Turn on your iPhone and they will immediately be synced. It can also track up to 16 different users in a household. Initials display on the screen when you weigh-in so you know it's recognizing the right person. There's also a smile and a frown to let you know if you're making progress or sliding back. I quickly learned to despise the frown!
The simplicity of the Wahoo scale is what I like. Connecting it to your iPhone is super easy and once it is connected, it couldn't be easier to use. Syncing happens seamlessly in the background and weigh-ins can be done with or without your iPhone.
My only complaint; I wish it worked with Android.
None the less, if you're an iOS user, the Wahoo scale is a great solution to track your weight on a regular basis.
Once you hit the gym or hit the road for a run, the Wahoo Blue HR Heart Rate Strap is designed to help you track your heart rate. Like the Wahoo scale, it also works using Bluetooth 4.0 so setup is simple and connecting is painless. It's compatible with the Wahoo Fitness app but also works with other fitness apps including the popular Runkeeper and Endomondo. You can use your standard app to track your location and speed and it'll also record your heart rate when you're wearing the Wahoo Heart Rate monitor. This will help you see how your body is reacting during your workout.
The device itself is a stretchy strap that goes around your chest. It has a watch-style battery and there are no buttons, it simply works when you're wearing it. It's also sweatproof and waterproof up to 5 feet.
If communication is interrupted during your workout, it'll continue to record data and then sync it up when your iPhone reconnects.
Simple, simple, simple! That's the key here. Strap it on, load up your fitness app and start working out. The Wahoo Blue HR just works. Again, I wish it worked with Android but if you're an iOS user, this is a solid option for tracking your heart rate while you exercise.
