THORNTON, Colo. — A man accused of assaulting his mother was taken into custody Sunday night after barricading himself inside a home for several hours, the Thornton Police Department said.

Police responded to a call of a family disturbance at 5438 E. 129t Ave about 1 a.m. after a woman told police she had been assaulted by her son on Saturday night and was in the hospital.

Officers searched for the suspect but did not find him, then returned about 8:15 a.m. Sunday where they smelled gasoline as they approached the home.

A secured perimeter was set up around the home, and the fire department and SWAT team were called out. Police obtained a search warrant and talked with the suspect, identified as 37-year-old William Soper, on the telephone.

After negotiating, Soper left the home but was “uncooperative and initiated a confrontation with officers outside the home,” police said in a news release.

He was taken into custody and is being charged with second-degree assault, false imprisonment, menacing and retaliation against a victim.

Police found a small amount of spilled gasoline near the garage door, but it was not enough to press additional charges.
