BOULDER, Colo. — An area around the downtown Boulder post office was briefly evacuated Tuesday morning because of a suspicious package that turned out to be an empty box.

The area that was shut down included Walnut Street between 14th and 16th streets, 14th Street at Canyon Boulevard and 15th Street at Lowry Lane. The post office is at 1905 15th St. and is a block from the popular Pearl Street Mall.

RTD’s Boulder Transit Center at 1400 Walnut St. was also closed because of the investigation.

The Boulder County bomb squad was called out to the scene to check on the package, which is 16 inches by 18 inches, had Cyrillic writing on the outside and had the address labels removed, the Boulder Police Department said.

The bomb squad was called as a precaution, Boulder police said.

Upon examination by a bomb robot, it was determined the package was empty and the roads around the area were reopened, as was the post office and the transit center.
