AURORA, Colo. -- One man was seriously injured in an officer-involved shooting late Sunday night, the Aurora Police Department said.

The incident happened about 11 p.m. on East Evans Avenue near South Blackhawk Street when police were conducting a traffic stop on a Saturn that was occupied by four people.

Police said a passenger got out of the vehicle and ran away. Officers gave chase and at some point, police said the suspect produced a handgun. A single shot was fired, hitting the suspect.

The suspect, only described as an adult male, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. There were no other injuries.

The other three occupants of the Saturn stayed in the vehicle and were detained, police said. No other suspects are being sought.

The identities of the officer who fired and the suspect have not been released because the investigation is ongoing. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave under normal protocol.

It's the third officer-involved shooting in two weeks in Aurora. On Wednesday, police fatally shot an armed carjacking suspect after leading a chase. On May 1, an officer shot an armed man inside a McDonald's restaurant.
