WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — An accused drunk driver appeared in court Monday following a hit-and-run crash Friday night that killed a teenager.

Police say 23-year-old Alton Kirkland took off running after the crash at 32nd and Kipling. They say he left his injured children and girlfriend in the vehicle.

Kirkland was arguing with his girlfriend while his 2-year-old and 6-month-old sons were in the back seat. Investigators say he was speeding when he T-boned two cars.

The crash killed 18-year-old Jordan Sprouse, who was about to graduate from high school. He planned to enter the military.

Kirkland was arrested shortly after running from the scene.

He’s charged with vehicular homicide, DUI, felony menacing and domestic abuse.
