Suspect hurt after shootout, chase with Denver police

DENVER — It was a wild end to the Memorial Day weekend in downtown Denver after an officer-involved shooting left one suspect injured.

Police responded to a call of a man with a gun at 15th and California streets about midnight Tuesday and found the suspect who matched the description at 17th Street and California.

Police say the suspect fired at them. There was an exchange of gunfire and a foot chase that ended with the suspect under arrest near Broadway and Cleveland Place.

The suspect was hit at least once and has nonlife-threatening injuries. No officers were injured.

Broadway was closed between 17th and Colfax Avenue, 17th Street was closed between California and Broadway, and 15th Street was closed between Welton and California streets to through traffic as police investigated.

About 6:20 a.m., Broadway was reopened to traffic but the other roads remained closed until 8:30 a.m.

RTD rerouted its F and H line trains to Union Station, and the D Line ended at the Convention Center. At 6:45 a.m., the lines reopened and RTD said to expect delays for about an hour.
