DENVER -- 28-year-old Julian Maldonado has been in the hospital for the past three months. He nearly died last November, after being hit by a car near Federal and Evans.
And Maldonado says it’s his fault, because he was wearing earphones and listening to music and didn’t hear the car coming as he stepped into the street.
Maldonado hopes his story can serve as a warning to others.
A recent study by the University of Maryland School of Medicine found that the number of accidents where the pedestrian was wearing earphones has tripled in the last six years. And in 75 percent of the cases, the pedestrian dies as a result of the injuries.
“I think America needs to wake up and see how valuable life is and a person can hurt for the rest of their life by wearing earphone," said Maldonado’s father, Julian Sr.
Maldonado’s recovery is almost miraculous and he and his family hope he will be able to go home within the next couple of weeks.
