CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- Recent terror attacks - and mass shootings - have local gun stores seeing a surge in sales, especially from first time buyers.

The CBI, which does the background checks on gun sales, says they always see an uptick in gun sales at this time of year, but management at a local gun shop says they are seeing more gun sales than ever.

With Christmas approaching faster than a fired bullet, you’ll find one store is filled with women… And they aren`t here for these purses lined with special pockets

“I’m hoping I do well enough to walk out of here and be confident to be back again,” said Diane Kelly, one first-timer at the Centennial Gun Club shooting range.

She says recent events like Colorado Springs have changed her mind on arming herself.

“I never shot a gun before and never thought I would but it’s amazing how certain things come into play and change your whole perspective,” said Kelly.

Manager Paul Stanley says the store is busier than it`s ever been with roughly 85 percent of gun buyers first timers.

Some are looking for the perfect holiday gift, others just want reassurance.

“We don`t always know their motivation,” said Stanley. “Other`s specifically cite ‘The world is a different place today, I was thinking about having a handgun just for personal protection and I want to know how to use it. “

Stanley says owning a gun is only half of the responsibility.

“You shouldn't have a gun unless you’re trained,” said Stanley.

If you're coming in to buy a gun for yourself, the background check takes only a few hours, so you can usually leave with a gun that same afternoon.

If you’re buying a gun as a gift for someone else, they suggest buying a gift card so that person can either buy a gun or the training that is so important that comes with it.
