AURORA, Colo. — An old neighborhood is getting a major upgrade as the Stanley Marketplace is hoping to turn northwest Aurora into the happening place.
The Stanley Aviation Corporation was once the largest employer in Aurora. The 100,000-square-foot building is the site where ejection seats were invented, and now more than 50 local businesses will call it home.
“There have been wonderful opportunities with this project but also a lot of challenges trying to take a 60-year-old building and bring it to modern purposes,” said Mark Shaker, a partner in the Stanley Marketplace development.
Shaker said it is important to maintain some of the history in the iconic building.
“We’ve become friends with the Stanley family and they have given us a treasure trove of old documents and files and artifacts, you name it,” Shaker said. “So you’ll see remnants of the past all throughout the venue.”
Stanley Marketplace is already 100 percent leased and will feature 54 business, all from Colorado. Numerous food and beverage options will be provided, along with a bakery, doughnut shop, butcher, a dentist and hair salon.
“We’ve really cultivated a community of like-minded business owners,” Shaker said.
The Marketplace will also help revive a neighborhood that is surrounded by old industrial buildings. Shaker said there are 500 new jobs coming to the area and he’s heard from the community that the jobs are much needed.
“We’ve been really engaged with the community to say we want this project to be valuable to you,” he said.
Stanley Marketplace is planning to host a grand opening at the end of October, while businesses start opening throughout September.
