DENVER — A sinkhole shut down the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Washington Street in Denver’s Capitol Hill area late Wednesday night.

It appeared to be around 3 feet wide and 5 feet deep, about the size of a manhole, but Xcel Energy crews say it’s much wider underground. Officers closed Nine Avenue between Eighth and 10th avenues and Washington Street between Pearl and Clarkson streets. See real time traffic delays and conditions here.

Xcel Energy crews and a team from Denver Public Works were on scene trying to determine whose responsibility it was to fix the hole.
