SHERIDAN, Colo. -- Police are on the lookout for a suspect who injured an officer in a successful effort to evade arrest near a Sheridan convenience store Sunday morning. Sheridan police said officers were called to a 7-Eleven at the corner of West Oxford Avenue and South Federal Boulevard around 8 a.m. on reports of a suspicious person and vehicle. When officers arrived on scene and made contact with that person, later identified as 24-year-old Ismael Rayos of Lakewood, they said Rayos was "evasive" and provided "false information." When officers got Rayos out of the vehicle, police said, officers were able to determine who he was and attempted to place him under arrest. The reason for that attempted arrest was not provided in the police statement. As officers attempted to arrest him, Rayos reportedly ran back into his still-running vehicle. That's when things got complicated, according to the police statement. "A Sheridan Officer attempted to stop the subject from fleeing and became trapped between the open driver's door and the driver's seat as the suspect accelerated in reverse," the statement read. "The officer attempted to move out of the way as he was pushed backwards by the door and fell to the ground. The car door passed over the officer as the subject accelerated forward northbound on Federal." One of the officers began pursuing the suspect. But when Rayos' identity was confirmed, the chase was called off. The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, police said, including a sprained ankle and multiple scrapes and contusions. Rayos crashed his vehicle at an undisclosed Denver address, according to police, and a .380 caliber handgun was later recovered from the vehicle. Rayos was still at large Sunday afternoon.
