LITTLETON, Colo. -- Investigators are working around the clock to try to track down stolen guns before they end up in the hands of criminals.
Officials said at least 29 guns were taken from Colorado Gun Broker in the 8900 block of West Bowles Avenue about 3:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Investigators said the thieves pried open the front door and a security gate, and then smashed the glass cases holding the guns. The business has surveillance cameras but they were not working.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it is seeing an alarming increase in gun thefts from federally licensed dealers in Colorado and across the country.
Acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge Tim Kelly said in 2014, 56 guns were stolen from dealers in Colorado. Last year, that rose to 121. And so far this year, including Tuesday morning's theft, 89 guns have been stolen.
Kelly said stolen guns generally become crime guns, sold or traded to criminals to use in other crimes. The ATF asks anyone with information to call police.
