WELLINGTON, Colo. — A semitruck driver died Thursday morning after crashing into a row of garages outside a condominium complex off Interstate 25 north of Fort Collins, the Colorado State Patrol said.

The crash happened just after 4 a.m. at the Wellington Village complex in the 4100 block of Crittenton Lane, near the intersection of the East Frontage Road just off northbound Interstate 25.

It’s not known what the truck was hauling but it was not anything hazardous.

The driver was traveling northbound on Interstate 25 when he went through a guardrail, through a ditch, went airborne and landed into the row of detached garages.

“If the carport wasn’t there, it probably would have touched the apartment complex itself,” CSP Trooper Chad Eastwood said.

“There were some residents that were trying to get into the truck to see if the guy was OK,” a resident said. “But once the fire chief looked in there you could tell the driver was deceased because they stopped trying to get into the truck and his body was trapped in there.”

A puppy was inside the truck but it survived. No other injuries were reported.

The driver was identified as Donald Stewart Butterfield, 51, of Hill City, S.D.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
