DENVER — A second vicious attack in five weeks on the 16th Street Mall was captured on camera this week.
Neal Rigga posted a video to YouTube that said the beating took place just before 11 p.m. Wednesday at 16th and Stout streets.
On the 7 1/2-minute video, a man is seen running across the mall before getting tackled and beaten by several people. The man was sucker-punched twice after being knocked to the pavement.
“A fight breaks out amongst a large group of people at night on the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver,” Rigga wrote on YouTube. “One man is knocked unconscious and then hit repeatedly in the head by another man. Police arrive shortly after but are unable to make contact or arrests. The man never received medical attention. After police leave a woman begins to bash a man with her fist.”
It’s not known what led to the incident.
On June 29, video of a man swinging a long pipe and hitting people on the mall caught the attention of residents and city leaders.
The video showed a man, later identified as 32-year-old Clarence Seeley, attacking people on the east end of the mall at Cleveland Place. Caleb Bonham shot the video around 6:30 p.m. from an office building and and then posted it.
It showed Seeley armed with the pipe, lashing out at people outside the McDonald’s. In the course of 30 seconds, Seeley is seen hitting three people with the pipe while stunned witnesses watched the scene unfold.
Police said Seeley had only been in Denver for nine days and is one of what they call “travelers,” homeless people from out of state who come to Denver for what Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said is the draw of marijuana.
“Let’s be clear, marijuana is drawing people to the mall,” Hancock said.
Seeley said this week from jail that the incident was in self-defense after a man threatened him with a knife. He also was not taking his medication for paranoia and schizophrenia at the time.
“It makes me feel sad that it had to happen like that or that I actually hurt people,” Seeley said. “I’m sorry. I didn’t come here for nothing like that. I love Denver.”
