LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. —  A 16-year-old boy who was lost overnight in the Crown Point area of the Comanche Peak Wilderness was found safe Sunday afternoon, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said.

“He was able to get to a high enough hilltop to get cellphone reception and called in,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement released about 3:30 p.m. “911 operators from Albany County, Wyoming, were able to get GPS coordinates for him, and the Air Force assisted with equipment that identified similar coordinates.”

Larimer County Search and Rescue was able to contact him and was escorting him to safety, the sheriff’s office said.

“Although a bit worn out from an unexpected overnight stay in the wilderness without sufficient gear or water, the youth was otherwise unharmed,” officials said.

The missing teen was hiking with two other teens Saturday night. They became lost and split up, according to the sheriff’s office. Search and rescue found two of the three boys.

On Sunday morning, the search for the missing teen expanded.

Members of Emergency Services, Search and Rescue, SWAT, Patrol Reserves, Victim’s Response Team, Emergency Services Support Group, Airlink, and Civil Air Patrol are helping with the search, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
