DENVER — A safety alert about a string of gropings in and near City Park. The suspect description is a little vague right now as is the number of women he’s groped.
Visitors to the park say they go there to walk, workout or enjoy the view. And now they have to closely watch their backs.
This place of natural beauty and calm is interrupted by the turbulence of a stranger sexually touching several women after approaching them from behind.
“Usually there`s a lot of people out with dogs, families so it’s surprising it’s happening,” said Ryan Cozens of Denver.
She walks or runs in the park four or five days a week–often with her boxer mix–which provides protection.
“This scary dog over here. Usually I feel safe having her with me. She`s a sweetheart. But people tend to be scared when they see her,” she said.
But she said she would have liked police to alert the public sooner. The crimes happened between Jan. 5 and Feb. 11.
“It makes me uneasy it’s been going on for this long,” Hillary Mclean said. She works at the Museum of Nature and Science.
She works and walks in the area nearly every day and said the gropings make her feel uncomfortable in her own backyard.
“It definitely will make me much more aware of my surroundings. I know lot of people walk with headphones in so they wouldn’t hear someone coming up behind them. That’s not something I’m going to do for while,” she said.
The suspect is a Hispanic or white man, 16 to 21 years old, about 5’5” to 5’8”, and thin.
Police hope the community raises its level of vigilance and reports anything suspicious.
