LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Lakewood police are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on 6th Avenue on Thursday night.
The crash happened around 4:45 p.m. when a black Ford focus was travelling eastbound on West 6th Avenue in the middle lane.
The driver of that vehicle, Andrew Huerena, 35, became distracted and drifted out of his lane to the left. In an attempt to regain control, he over corrected and drove into the right lane colliding with a Toyota 4 Runner, according to Lakewood Police.
The collision caused the 4 Runner, driven by Kimberly Henderson, 51, to leave the highway. The vehicle rolled several times, crashing through the wire fencing that protects the light rail tracks and coming to rest on the 6th Avenue service road about 20 feet below.
Henderson was pronounced dead on the scene. A juvenile male passenger in the car was extricated and transported with nonlife-threatening injuries. Poliec had no updates on his condition as of 9 a.m. on Friday.
Huerena remained on scene. He and his passenger were not injured in the crash.
Huerena was charged with two counts of careless driving resulting in bodily injury and/or death.
Lakewood Police say alcohol, drugs and texting are not suspected in this case. Evidence on scene also indicates that speed was not a factor, police say.
The light rail tracks were not damaged and light rail service continued as the investigation was conducted, Lakewood Police say.
