ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- People who live in an apartment complex in Englewood say they have had enough of what they call unsafe living conditions.
Some say they’re left in the dark at the Golden Nugget Apartments near South Broadway and West Belleview Avenue.
“It’s just really scary,” one resident said.
A woman who lives in the complex doesn’t want to show her face but says the exterior lights have been out for more than three months.
Amid the darkness, a staircase was missing for several days last week.
“It’s just really dark and you can’t really see when you’re walking throughout the hallway and going up and down the stairs,” the resident said. “You don`t know if someone’s standing in the corner.”
The woman says she has complained to management about the broken lights, but nothing has been done.
“It was said that a wire was cut due to the fixing of a stairwell,” the woman said.
The apartment staff says construction crews cut the wires on accident, but a licensed technician is expected to fix the lights by the end of the week.
Residents can file a complaint with the city if there are unsafe walkways, stairs, lighting, fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
“We’ll send an inspector out to investigate claim and follow up with management with a notice of violation,” said Lance Smith with the city of Englewood.
If the complex doesn’t fix the violation within 30 days, the city could force it to court.
Inspectors did not go to the Golden Nugget, but residents still hope that speaking out will put their concerns in the spotlight.
“I’d like some line,” a resident said. “You just can’t see anything.”
