DENVER — Outside Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Tuesday, Broncos fans said they were surprised to the learn the Denver Metropolitan Stadium District was “not aware of any bids” to take over the naming rights of the stadium after Sports Authority has filed for bankruptcy.

“I would think people would get on that,” Connie Stafford said. “It’s the Broncos. It’s not just that they just won, but they’re such a huge winning entity.”

Now the question is: What’s next?

The Sports Authority logo will stay up at the stadium at least through the end of July because Sports Authority had already paid for it.

A representative for the stadium board said it’s a waiting game until Sports Authority misses its next payment on Aug. 1. It will have 30 days after that to pay.

The board is hoping for $20 million for the last five years of Sports Authority’s naming rights contract. It said it relies on the revenue to help pay for stadium upkeep.

“It’s pretty wild how much they pay to have their name all over everything,” Broncos fan Seth Dombach, said.

The naming rights are stuck in liquidation limbo. They are part of Sports Authority’s intellectual property up for auction. A judge has to approve any bids. The deadline for bids was June 27. Some said they could launch a new auction for the naming rights.

While Dick’s Sporting Goods has been the lead bidder overall, the retailer has not shown interest in the stadium naming rights. Its name is on the Colorado Rapids soccer stadium in Commerce City.

The Broncos first preseason home game is Aug. 20 with the regular-season opener on Sept. 8.

Regardless of the logo on the facility, fans said they know what to call their stadium.

“It’s always been Mile High,” Dombach said.
