DENVER -- In a follow up to a FOX31 Denver investigation we found another high-end Cherry Creek salon that has been operating illegally.

Our report Tuesday prompted the state to shut down Coco’s salon at 287 North Columbine St. in Denver.

Now we’ve learned Coco’s owner, Bumsik Shin, is operating another unlicensed Cherry Creek salon and its customers likely have no idea.

Our investigation began, after we received a complaint from a Denver woman, who did not want to be identified, who told us she got a nasty nail infection just hours after getting a pedicure at Coco’s.

“It just makes me cringe thinking about how disgusting it is,” she said.

Medical experts say her particular nail infection is usually caused by un-sanitized tools or dirty pedicure tub water.

The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies inspects salons to make sure they are complying with state health and safety standards.

But we found DORA has not inspected Coco’s for at least 3 years.  That’s because Coco’s has not been licensed to operate since 2011.

So the state assumed the salon was no longer in business.

As a result of our investigation, DORA shut down Coco’s for operating illegally.

Shin refused to comment.

But now we have learned, closing the salon was not enough to put Shin out of business.

Instead, we confirmed, Shin is referring Coco’s customers to his “other salon,” the 5th  Avenue Nail Salon, also in Cherry Creek.

According to state records, 5th Avenue Nail Salon is also owned by Shin and is also un-licensed and has been for 3 years.

The last time it was inspected by the state, in 2011, it received more than $4,000 in fines for dirty pedicure tubs and unlicensed employees.

We went looking for Shin at 5th Avenue Nail salon, but a woman who identified herself as the manager told us he wasn’t there and asked us to leave.

After several calls, we were able to reach Shin on the phone. He claimed he sold 5th  Avenue Nails last year, but he would not provide us with the new owner’s name or any documents to confirm the sale.

DORA is launching its own investigation and could issue a cease and desist order for 5th Avenue Salon, for operating illegally, which will force that salon to close too.
