Problem Solvers: Elderly couple left with $13,000 Xcel bill

DENVER, Colo. – After falling on hard times, an elderly Denver couple found themselves with a whopper of an Xcel bill. It totals $13,333.

In all fairness, Edna Giron and her husband said it was their fault. But they’re both disabled, can’t work and have had a heck of a time dealing with other bills.

For a while, their Xcel payment was up to par. But then things got bad in 2012 when their 26-year-old daughter overdosed on drugs and died.

“I called the police when they got there I couldn’t see them examine her. I had to walk outside,” Edna said, choking back tears.

The funeral, coupled in with other bills left the family broke.

Edna and her husband live off of her husband’s pension, which is about $2,000 a month. Most of that money is tied up in their house payment and medical bills.

On an average month, the Giron’s Xcel bill is about $300+. They couple says it’s only been paying about $100 to $200 of it a month, which is why it’s added up to $13,000 over the years.

“Sometimes we’d have to skip to pay other bills,” Edna said.

They were hoping to get back on a repayment program, but the Girons said Xcel wasn’t willing to play ball. Instead, the Giron’s allege Xcel wanted them to pay everything back all at once before they could setup a new payment plan.

That’s when the FOX31 Denver Problem Solvers got involved.

We contacted a representative from Xcel directly.

“Is there anything that you guys can do – it’s so close to Christmas – to help this family?” asked FOX31 Problem Solver Kevin Torres.

“Yes. As a matter of fact our call center director said she would be willing to give them a call,” the representative said.

“Is there a way then where you can work with them to figure out exactly how to make some payments to get caught up on this – because it is going to take them a while to get caught up on this whole thing?,” Torres asked.

“Yes, the answer is yes,” the Representative said.

The Xcel Representative went on to say the director would discuss a repayment plan with the Giron’s. They said the couple would receive a phone call no later than Wednesday.

As for the Giron family, they’re thrilled to learn they’ll be able to get back on track with their bill.

“Well it seems like they weren’t going to do anything – they were kind of being mean to us – until you guys came and talked to them. Maybe they’ll give us a chance and want to work with us,” Edna Giron said.
