VATICAN CITY, Italy -- The pope's last appearance was extra special for one Colorado family that just moved from Denver to Rome.
On his last day in the Vatican, Benedict XVI blessed Colorado-born child John Paul Uebbing. The youngster was taken on board the pope-mobile Wednesday. We spoke to his mother on the phone about the family's special moment.
"Pope Benedict took John Paul in his arms and gave him a kiss," Jenny Uebbing said. "It was such a precious moment. I got very choked up. He looked at me, I was able to tell him thank you and he smiled.
"It's a moment I'll never forget."
John Paul's father, Dave, works for the Catholic News Agency in Italy. The family moved to from Denver to Rome in January.
Today, Pope Benedict will become the first leader of the Catholic church to resign his post in almost 600 years. The church hopes to have his replacement in place by Easter.
