DENVER — Of the four Republican candidates for governor, Tom Tancredo has shown the most prowess to date on the fundraising front.
Leading in the early primary polls, Tancredo is now looking to increase his advantage as the year’s fourth and final fundraising quarter enters its final weeks.
He’s been sending his supporters emails from high profile supporters of late; last week it was Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
On Monday, it was Ted Nugent, rock star and bow hunter extraordinaire.
Both endorsers are popular with the conservative, Libertarian Tea Party base of the GOP — and could prove helpful in propelling Tancredo through a primary field that also includes Secretary of State Scott Gessler, state Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, and former Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp.
A poll last week shows Tancredo, whose name ID is far greater than his rivals, far ahead of the field.
But many moderate Republicans are concerned — as much as Democrats are hopeful — that Tancredo, should he win the primary, won’t be able to win a statewide race against Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper because his positions, not to mention his supporters, are too far removed from the political center.
