DENVER -- The son of Colorado Sen. Mark Udall was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly tried to break into three cars in Eldorado Springs and was caught with heroin in his pocket.

Residents in the 4700 block of Eldorado Springs Drive called police around noon Wednesday to report they saw Jed Udall breaking and entering into cars, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle told the Daily Camera, which was first to report the story Thursday.

Jedediah Lee Fox-Udall, 26, was arrested without incident on suspicion of four counts of first-degree trespassing and a single count of possession of a controlled substance.

He was booked into the Boulder County Jail before being released.

Udall, a Democrat facing reelection this fall, issued a statement about the arrest.

"Maggie and I are deeply distressed to learn of our son's arrest," Udall said. "We love our son and stand with him in his commitment to getting the treatment he needs. We appreciate the private space to deal with this as a family."
