DENVER — In case viewers didn’t get the gist of Republican Cory Gardner’s first TV ad, the U.S. Senate candidate is underlining it — that he’s a full generation younger than Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Udall — in his campaign’s second spot, which hits Colorado airwaves Monday.
In the 30-second spot titled “Big Shoes”, Gardner, who appeared in his first ad, “Big City”, with his daughter, Alyson, sits with his own father and his young son, Thatcher.
Once again, Gardner broadly criticizes Washington and the Democratic-led Senate for not being accountable to future generations.
“My great granddad built our family business,” Gardner says into the camera. “My dad and granddad had big shoes to fill. So did I.
“All of us in Colorado walk in footsteps of pioneers. Now, the footsteps that guide us belong to the next generation. Washington burdens them with debt. Mortgages their future.
“We need to shake up the United States Senate. Put in a New Generation – one that’s accountable…to the Next Generation.”
Like Gardner’s first spot, this one aims to portray Gardner, 39, as a family man and to subtly position himself as representative of a younger generation than his opponent, Udall, who is 63 and seeking a second six-year term in the senate.
Udall’s own latest ad, rolled out last week, is almost a direct rebuttal to this line of attack, showing the Democrat meeting with young entrepreneurs inside Galvanize, a Denver incubator.
“In TV ads he claims to be new, but Congressman Cory Gardner’s economic record — it’s backwards and wrong,” the narrator says in the Udall ad.
Gardner is working to introduce himself to voters as an acceptable alternative to Udall, whose campaign has tried to portray Gardner as “too extreme” based on his support for personhood and for other anti-abortion legislation.
