DENVER — Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper touted the state’s economic recovery over the course of his first term Tuesday while announcing a new coalition of more than 100 supporters from the business community who are backing his reelection bid.

“I’m not sure there’s another state that’s increased it’s proportion of Fortune 500 companies like we have,” Hickenlooper said, referring to his success in recruiting Arrow Electronics, TriZetto and Ardent Mills to the state. “That’s about selling. We’ve worked hard.

“These companies are not only proud to be here, but they’re succeeding here and I think one could argue they’ll be more successful here than they could be anywhere else.”

Hickenlooper, a former entrepreneur who started a brewpub in Lower Downtown, also hit the one of the campaign’s main talking points in a conference call with reporters: that Colorado has gone from 40th to 4th in the nation in job creation since he took office in 2010, that the state has created 200,000 jobs on his watch and seen 32 consecutive months of job growth.

“These companies are not only proud to be here, but they’re succeeding here and I think one could argue they’ll be more successful here than they could be anywhere else,” said Hickenlooper, who also touted Colorado’s unemployment rate dropping from 9.1 percent when he took office to 5.5 percent now.

More than 100 entrepreneurs, owners of businesses small and large, are among those on the campaign’s list of Business Leaders for Hickenlooper (full list below).

“In 21 years of doing business in Colo, I’ve never come across a more authentic human being or visionary than John Hickenlooper,” said Chad McWhinnney, one of the developers of the new Union Station project.

“John is one of the finest people I’ve ever worked with. I really believe he’s got the best interests of Colorado in mind.”

Support from the business community has helped Hickenlooper’s campaign raise more than $3 million to date, $1.4 million of which has already been spent to reserve TV air time over the final month before Election Day.

Republican Bob Beauprez won his party’s gubernatorial nomination on June 24, and recent polls show the race to be more competitive than many anticipated.
