DENVER — If you’ve been watching television this summer, you might think that Rep. Mike Coffman is about to face some sort of special, off- off-year election, so saturated are the metro area’s airwaves with ads from various outside groups encouraging you to call the congressman for one reason or another.

To be clear: he’s not; Coffman, R-Aurora, isn’t on the ballot until next November, but his reelection fight against former Democratic statehouse Speaker Andrew Romanoff is expected to be one of the most costly and competitive races in the country.

With Coffman still in the cross-hairs over immigration reform, he’s now under attack on another issue — climate change.

In a new TV spot that began airing this week, the League of Conservation Voters is comparing Coffman to an ostrich for having his “head in the sand on climate change.”

“Coffman is so extreme he questions if climate change is even a problem,” the ad’s narrator states.

Coffman is one of four members of Congress from across the country who are being targeted with this $2 million ad buy.

“If you want to see action on climate change, you’ve got to call out the folks who are the climate change deniers in Congress,” said LCV’s Jeff Gohringer Tuesday.

The ad will run for two weeks.
